The training offers an excellent opportunity for participants to develop skills for supporting research impact for both individual projects as well as at an institutional level and to design their own research impact journey. Participants will learn how to develop impactful research proposals for both bottom up and top-down funding calls; utilise scientific storytelling techniques to aid impact writing, planning and implementation; and understand, contribute to and influence institutional approaches to impact.
The training will take over two days and participants are required to attend both days.
Research managers and experts with two or more years of experience in pre- or post- award research management, research policy or strategy, who want to upskill in the area of research impact.
The EARMA Office is only a 05-minute walk from Gare Centrale. Situated across from Brussels Park, it offers easy access to nature's beauty. Moreover, the Office enjoys excellent transportation links, allowing guests to effortlessly explore the city's attractions via metros, buses, trams, and taxis.
If accommodation is needed, we recommend staying in the Motel One Brussels or Pillows City Hotel Brussels Centre just a couple of minutes from the EARMA office, or in a close area where good options are 9Hotel Central, Hotel Hubert Grand Place, or Hilton Brussels Grand Place.
Event participants are kindly invited to consider using sustainable transportation options if possible. The train is a green alternative that provides a pleasant travel experience. Anabel Sánchez-Plaza is BsC in Biology and a doctorate in Environment and Society. She’s Research Impact Officer at CREAF and previously researcher at the centre. As a researcher, she has extensive experience in developing EU projects and has coordinated citizen science and participatory initiatives, fostering collaboration between science and society to tackle environmental challenges. As Research Impact Officer, she launched the centre’s impact unit and developed CREAF’s inaugural Impact Strategy. Her role involves enhancing staff skills, building stakeholder connections, and monitoring and showcasing impact while embedding a culture of impact in the institution and its research. She was the first ever Impact Officer in the Catalan research community. She’s contributing to the Spanish research evaluation system as part of ANECA’s Commission tasked with advising on evaluation to the Spanish accreditation Agency.
Anja Smykowski, former researcher and scientific publisher, now channels her passion for impactful scientific storytelling in her role as the coordinator of grant and impact support at the University Medical Centre in Groningen, the Netherlands. She leverages her storytelling skills to shape the institute's research strategy and strengthen its impact support infrastructure. Anja gives scientific storytelling workshops to researchers, PhD and master students and started her own company on scientific storytelling in 2022.
Emma Siddall, PhD. is the Coordinator of the Horizon Europe Pillar 02 and EIC supports and the Horizon Europe Impact Specialist for the pre-award team at Trinity College Dublin. In this role she developed a series of workshops and resources to support the development of truly impactful projects, and regularly provides impact training. In May 2024 she co-authored the LERU in-depth quantitative and qualitative analysis of Horizon Europe reviewers; comments which provides an evidence base to improve proposal developed. Emma is a founding core group member of the EARMA impact thematic group and is an impact ambassador for the Horizon Europe RMRoadmap project, an EU project coordinated by EARMA. Emma has also project managed a number of European Commission projects and prior to becoming a research manager she worked as an academic in the area of sustainable urban design.
Dr. Giovanna Lima works with strategic approaches to enabling societal impact in research, education, and engagement at multiple institutional levels at Erasmus University Rotterdam (Netherlands). Prior to this, she served as Trinity College Dublin’s first Research Impact Officer with the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute, developing the Researcher Impact Framework, which has been translated into French, Portuguese and Spanish. With a PhD and master's in public administration from FGV-EAESP, she was a research consultant for The Economist Impact and held a number of senior public management roles for the City Hall of São Paulo.
