In 1995, a small but determined group of research administrators came together with a vision: to create a European community for sharing knowledge, exchanging experiences, and supporting professional development in the emerging field of research management. That vision gave rise to EARMA — the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators — and today, thirty years on, we are proud to celebrate how far we’ve come.
What began as a modest initiative has grown into a vibrant association with over 1,500 individual and institutional members across Europe and beyond. EARMA has become a leading voice in research policy, a trusted partner in European initiatives, and a hub for learning, mentoring, collaboration and innovation.
Over the decades, EARMA has been instrumental in shaping research management as a recognised profession. Through annual conferences, working groups, policy engagement, and partnerships, the Association has consistently advocated for the visibility, recognition and strategic importance of RMAs in the research ecosystem.
From the development of thematic groups and mentorship programmes to our role in EU-funded projects such as RM Roadmap, RM COMP and CARDEA, EARMA has helped define not only the competencies of research managers but also their essential role in driving scientific excellence and impact.
In 2025, as EARMA celebrates this major milestone, it also made history by hosting the INORMS Congress in Madrid— the largest international gathering of research management professionals to date. This global stage was the perfect backdrop to reflect on the Association’s roots and highlight the unity, strength and purpose of the community it has helped to build.
More than anything, EARMA’s story is a story of people. Of passionate individuals coming together to support one another, build careers, and contribute to research that changes the world. It is the story of volunteers, Board members, mentors, newcomers and lifelong contributors who have shaped not just the Association, but the profession itself.
As Dipti Pandya, EARMA Chair, recently remarked:
“This anniversary is not just about looking back — it’s about honouring the people who made EARMA what it is, and continuing to grow a community rooted in trust, learning, and collaboration.”
As EARMA enters its fourth decade, it remains committed to building capacity, supporting emerging leaders, and helping institutions across Europe navigate an ever-evolving research landscape. New initiatives in professional development, stakeholder engagement, and recognition frameworks are already in motion — and with them, a renewed commitment to the values that started it all.
Here’s to 30 years of EARMA — and to the people, partnerships, and purpose that will shape the next 30.
