With eight companies floating on the stock market, 18 acquisitions and a total of €1.3 billion of extra private investment leveraged, the SME Instrument has established itself as an essential player on the European SME and startup scene. Since its start in 2014, the SME Instrument has invested in a unique selection of 3200 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to get their breakthrough innovations faster on the market. From a total budget of €3 billion, €1.3 billion were committed from 2014 to the end of 2017.
In 2018, SME Instrument became part of the European Innovation Council (EIC) Pilot. The EIC brought together four active schemes: the SME Instrument, Fast-Track to Innovation, Future and Emerging Technologies (FET Open) and EIC Prizes.
Since then there have been many vast changes. For example, the SME Instrument Phase I grant ceased in September 2019, and a mandatory Blended Finance option was added to EIC Accelerator (formerly SME Instrument Phase II). Now that Horizon Europe is starting, there is a new set of rules for the EIC Accelerator.
Innovation will become more prominent in Horizon Europe which is recognized in Pillar 3 Innovative Europe. Therefore, researchers and RMAs should prepare for it and need to understand not only its intention but also how it will be implemented.
Often start-up companies are created as spin-offs from Academia. Some of these companies are being hosted by the institute in their early stages. Funding is very crucial for such young companies and they may approach RMAs to seek advice. Therefore, this session is relevant and important to RMAs.
