DMP and research data in Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe

This event will introduce EARMA members to key issues, lessons learned and best practices in research data management (policy) in Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe. Processing of personal data and GDPR compliance with project activities will be considered as well.

Data has been described as the 21st century’s most valuable resource. Research data is also increasingly being conceptualized as inherently valuable products of scientific research, rather than components of the research process that have no value in themselves. Consequently, research funders both on the international and the national level increasingly include requirements for data management (including openness).

One of the trendsetters in this regard was the European Commission, which developed open research data and research data management requirements in its multiannual framework programme for research and innovation, Horizon 2020 (2014 to 2020). A key component is an obligation to create a Data Management Plan (DMP). In recent years, the objective to make data not only open but FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable), has been gaining prominence as an important principle for data management and DMPs. This trend will continue in the new Framework Programme Horizon Europe (2021–2027).

Speakers

Daniel Spichtinger is an independent consultant working on open science, including open access and data management policies. From 2012-2018 he was a member of the unit dealing with open science in the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation. In this capacity, he contributed to the development of EU open access policies (for scientific publications) and open/FAIR research data policies, including the design and implementation of the Open Access to Research Data Pilot in Horizon 2020. As of September 2018, Daniel is registered as an independent expert for EU research policy & projects, open science and open/FAIR data as well as having started a part-time position with the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft in Vienna, Austria.

Lorenzo Mannella is a project manager with a background in plant biotechnology and science journalism. He works at the University of Bologna, managing technical, financial and ethical aspects of EU-funded projects. He works with data protection officers and legal consultants to assess GDPR compliance with research activities. As a communications officer at the University of Bologna, he also contributed to research projects in food packaging and industrial symbiosis. He also worked as a freelance journalist for Wired Italia, Motherboard, Galileo and Maker Faire Rome. 

Moderator

Craig Nicholson is the News Editor at Research Europe, an R&D policy newspaper from Research Professional News. He shapes the paper’s coverage of everything from the EU research programme to the open-access initiative Plan S and working conditions for researchers.
