Target Group

Experienced managers and leaders from research, grants, or sponsored programme offices at research organisations like universities, research institutions, research councils and funding agencies. The group will consist of up to 28 key leaders from Europe and beyond with more than 4 years of experience in their leadership role either as formally responsible for RMA staff or functionally managing RMA networks or project teams.

 

Purpose of the Event

Leading the provision of excellent research support to excellent researchers is both demanding and rewarding. You and your teams sit in the nexus of competing demands from funders, researchers, employers, ministries, commercial stakeholders, and the taxpayer. Converting your strategic intent into serviceable interventions in that environment is a constant challenge. As a leader, you will often find yourself in the ultimate ‘alone in the office’ scenario.

EARMA’s tailor-made ‘Leadership in Research Event’ is designed to support you in dealing with these issues while giving you the time and the space to think and reflect. Through a blend of key-note presentations, peer working and learning groups, case studies and networking opportunities you can share your ambitions and your dilemmas with your peers and bring back new perspectives and tools to your work.

The ‘Leadership in Research Event’ does not end on the last day. There is a growing cohort of alumni who continue to contribute to the programme and who are regular contributors to a ‘Leadership’ strand at the annual conference. During the event, you will be challenged to contribute to a follow-up process on a topic that is of importance to you as a leader leadership.

The EARMA Office is only a 05-minute walk from Gare Centrale. Situated across from Brussels Park, it offers easy access to nature's beauty. Moreover, the Office enjoys excellent transportation links, allowing guests to effortlessly explore the city's attractions via metros, buses, trams, and taxis.

Trainers

Evelina Brännvall 3
Evelina Brännvall, PhD is an Immediate Past Chairwomen of EARMA. She is a Head of LTU European Office and a Senior Research Manager at Grants Office of Luleå University of Technology (LTU) in Sweden. In her roles she supports the university's leadership and researchers in Research & Innovation Policies, external funding issues as well as positioning of LTU at EU affairs. She has one PhD in Environmental Engineering and Landscape Management (Lithuania, 2006) and another one in Waste Science and Technology (Sweden, 2013). Evelina transitioned into research management in January 2014. Since then, she has been on various EARMA Committees, graduating the first cohort of the EARMA Certificate Programme in Research Management. She has been on the Annual Conference Programme Committee since the very beginning and chaired it for two years. She is a co-organiser of EARMA Leadership programme as well as a member of the EARMA Policy and Representation Standing Committee. 
 

Jan Andersen 2

Jan Andersen, Senior Executive Officer, University of Southern Denmark, former EARMA Chair and current member of the steering committee for the EARMA Leadership Program. He was a DARMA Board member and founder and chair of BESTPRAC, Head of the INORMS WG on Organisational Development. He worked in RMA since 1994, whereof 20 years with the University of Copenhagen. Jan was conceptualising the Research Information System PURE. Jan is part of the EARMA Pasta Making Event, and received the EARMA Lifetime Achievement Award 2022.
 

Ragnar Lie 2

Ragnar Lie is Senior Advisor at Universites Norway, the Norwegian “rectors conference”, working with topics like research policies, open science, research administration and management, career policies and leadership development. He has worked in the higher educational sector for more than 30 years; first at The Research Council of Norway, then at University of Oslo, (both at center,- faculty, and central level), and, since 2011, at Universities Norway. In EARMA he has previous been engaged in in the Professional Development and Recognition Committee and in the Board, and presently in the Annual Programme Conference Committee as well as the organizing committee for the Leadership Event. He holds a degree in Political Science from Department of Comparative Politics, University of Bergen.
 

Speakers

Janez Potocnik

Janez Potočnik has a PhD in economics from the University of Ljubljana, and became a Slovenian politician serving as Minister for European Affairs. He became European Commissioner for Research and Innovation from 20024 and Environment from 2009 until 2014. In 2014, he became co-chair of the International Resource Panel (IRP), a forum of scientists and experts working on natural resources management. He has a long range of roles and advisories in European and Global activities. While commissioner, Potočnik stated that he believes trading knowledge and the development of an information society to create prosperity is as important to Europe as trading steel and coal to create peace was 50 years ago. He aimed to develop the European Research Area.

Joachim Wiemann
Joachim Wiemann is the Deputy Head of Unit of the Common Strategic Planning and Programming Service in DG Research & Innovation of the European Commission. The unit prepares the Horizon Europe Strategic Plans, coordinates the adoption of the Horizon Europe Work Programmes and steers the preparation of the next Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10). Joachim Wiemann joined the Commission in 2011. Before moving to DG Research and Innovation in 2022, Joachim Wiemann worked in the Secretariat-General and in DG Competition. He holds a Master's degree from Harvard Law School and a Ph.D. in law from the University of Passau, Germany.

Olaf Svenningsen 2

Olaf Svenningsen was originally trained as a scientist with a Ph.D. in geology from Lund University in Sweden. His RMA career began when he was employed at the US National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2000. Subsequently, he has worked as an RMA at Uppsala University in Sweden, the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and the Region of Southern Denmark, and at Lund University, giving a broad and international experience. In 2021, Olaf started as an independent research advisor in his own company, Research Lighthouse. He is also EARMA’s Senior Project Liaison for RM-ROADMAP, an EU project coordinated by EARMA. From 2013 to 2018, Olaf was the Chair of DARMA in Denmark, and has also served on a.o.  EARMA’s board, the INORMS Council, and as a global editor of the US NCURA Magazine.

Ignasi Salvado

Ignasi Salvado graduated in Chemical Engineering by the University Rovira i Virgili in 2000, he initiated his career managing European Projects at the same university. At the end of 2003, moved to the UK where obtained, in 2007, his PhD in Chemical – Environmental Engineering by the University of Nottingham. He was awarded with different grants and prices to develop his PhD. He worked as Innovation Manager at Ransomwood Estates Ltd from 2007 in a company – university collaborative project. In 2008, he moved back to Spain to work as R&D Projects Manager at Air Products Inc. In 2010, he took the position at the University Rovira i Virgili, as head of the R&D&i area. In April 2023, he initiated a new adventure in Brussels, as head of the European Office of the association of 4 top research Spanish universities (2 located in Barcelona and 2 in Madrid). He is also HRS4R expert for the European Commission and he is trying to learn how Equality, Diversity and Inclusion can help Research Support Office to do a better job. Since the PhD, Ignasi has dedicated his career on R&D Management and looking for ways of enhancing and measuring its impact, efficiency and outputs. He is got special interest in European R&D projects and International collaboration to boost the quality of the research results.
