Postdoc policy - lessons learned
Implementation of the Postdoc policy in University medical centre - challenges and successes
Abstract
Many young PhD and postdoc scholars aim for academic careers, but only a few secure permanent university positions. Radboud University Medical Centre in Nijmegen, Netherlands has introduced the Scientific Career Path (SCP) policy to provide a fair route to academic success or leadership roles outside academia.
Postdocs face career and personal challenges, so we offer clear career guidance from the start, along with tools for supervisors. These resources are tailored to different stages of the postdoc phase, emphasizing personal and professional growth.
Our goal is to integrate the SCP policy into everyday academic life, nurturing the next generation of academics whether they stay in academia or pursue roles in society/business.
Developing and implementing this policy involves multiple stakeholders, including academics, HR, finance, and department heads requiring a scale of competences for RMA. While it can be a lengthy process, the results are worth it. We will discuss best practices, pitfalls, and necessary skills in the presentation.
