Shaping the future of responsible research
Shaping the future of responsible research and innovation: EARMA in the European landscape
Conference
Format: Oral 30 Minutes
Topic: Collaboration and Strategic Alliances
Abstract
Responsible research and innovation are key components in sustaining and enhancing research environments based on good governance, high ethical standards, openness, fairness, transparency and equity, and collaborative and peer interactions. Moreover, they are a broader institutional responsibility, as responsible research and innovation requires a right organisational culture in which to flourish.
This crucial role of responsible research and innovation is also recognised at the EU level, especially in the Horizon Europe – the flagship EU funding programme, that strengthens the connection between science, society and the core values on the European Union. It reinforces a creative, innovative and responsible research in the member states, and fosters global collaborations. The programme addresses the most relevant topics, as the responsible research and innovation, emerging technologies, climate change, transparency, equity and openness, science with and for society. One of the goals of the Horizon Europe is also to cooperate with key stakeholders and place their voices at the core of the collaboration between science and society. The pro-active role of the EARMA, as the representative of the RMAs in relevant Horizon Europe funded projects, supports the overall sustainability of the newest research developments by implementing them into the managerial and administrative practice of institutions and organisations. We will present the most recent projects and the role, tasks and contribution of the EARMA community, also in a broader, European and global perspective.
Representatives of the EARMA, the EARMA ERION group (Ethics and Research Integrity Officer Network EARMA) and of the coordinating institutions (APRE - Agency for the Promotion of European Research and EUREC – European Network of Research Ethics Committees) of the Horizon Europe funded projects PATTERN (Empowering Open and Responsible Research and Innovation: https://www.pattern-openresearch.eu) and iRECs (UNDERSTANDING ETHICS IN TECH - A Horizon Europe project training researchers in ethics for new technologies: https://www.irecs.eu.) will discuss the role of RMAs in translating responsible research and innovation principles into practice.
