Abstract

The European University Association notes that the situation of postdoctoral researchers (PDRs) is probably one of the most hotly debated topics within EUA member universities. While they acknowledge that significant work has already been done to address this specific group, there is still a lot to do, and exchange on institutional approaches and good practices is very much needed. While national and international quality frameworks exist at the doctoral level and implementation of these principles is supported through graduate schools and doctoral colleges there is little consistency in the institutional approach to support PDRs and a clear lack of evidence-based policy and practice. The purpose of this paper is to share the design, development and implementation of a postdoctoral program aimed at developing leadership, enhancing research performance and supporting the career development of early-career PDRs. The effectiveness of the programme’s key features and components are evaluated over the development period. Key recommendations that will assist others in adopting and developing meaningful and effective postdoctoral programmes revolve around a structure that potentially provides a more equitable space to support the career development of PDRs.
