Ethical Labyrinth of AI
Navigating the Ethical Labyrinth: The Role of AI in Research Support and Proposal Design
Conference
Format: Fifteen-Minute Discussion Tables
Topic: IT Systems and tools supporting RMA now and in the future
Abstract
The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionised various fields, including research support and management. Tools such as ChatGPT offer unprecedented opportunities to automate tasks and generate content, speeding up the creation of research proposals.
However, these advances also raise critical ethical questions that cannot be ignored. Can we safely use AI tools like ChatGPT to design innovative research proposals? Should we focus on developing safer AI tools tailored to research management?
In this talk, we will explore the ethical dimensions of using AI in research support, focusing on the safety and reliability of using ChatGPT in proposal design. We will look at possible scenarios where AI could significantly change research management practises and discuss both the opportunities and ethical dilemmas that arise.
Topics include data privacy, algorithm bias, and the potential for AI to either perpetuate or mitigate existing inequities in research funding and support.
We will assess whether the benefits of AI in research funding outweigh the ethical risks and propose a framework for the responsible use of AI in this context. The goal is to stimulate a nuanced dialogue among research funding professionals, ethical experts, and AI developers to promote a collaborative approach to addressing the ethical complexities of AI in research funding.
