Abstract

Information technology is continuously evolving, and the Metaverse is one such technology that can assist with Research Management and Administration (RMA). Metaverse platforms are designed as the next iteration of the Internet – to bring three dimensions into a virtual space. They are platforms where people can interact with others in real-time thus breaking geographical restrictions. This can result in new levels of collaboration and learning in RMA.
We have seen, since the COVID 19 pandemic, that traditional face-to-face methods of interacting can be transcended. Virtual meetings, conferences, etc. have become common place. However, these existing platforms still have their limitations. The Metaverse can offer interactive alternatives, by enabling RMA teams, institutions, research management associations, funders and others to collaborate seamlessly in a virtual world. Virtual spaces can be established in the Metaverse that would allow for knowledge-sharing and learning, with meetings rooms, libraries and spaces for informal get-togethers, thereby enhancing collaboration, while still allowing for teams to be geographically distributed. The RMA community could, for example, host virtual events, conferences, seminars, poster sessions, etc. aimed at exploring national and global funding opportunities.
Why is this different though to platforms such as Microsoft Teams, or Zoom? The Metaverse brings people together in a dynamic shared space, where group or one-on-one interactions can take place. Current online meeting platforms focus on single thread conversations, and although some do offer features such as break-away rooms, these do not allow for the same level of collaboration.
Although the Metaverse is in its infancy, and many factors need to be taken into account, let Research Management and Administration be a front-runner in this race.
