Abstract

Evidence shows that organisations embracing diversity, equity and inclusion perform better, and efforts to improve DEI across the research community are increasing. However, many groups remain underrepresented.

To better understand the barriers to achieving greater DEI, and to identify opportunities for change, Springer Nature conducted a review - using an online survey and series of interviews to capture the perceptions and experiences of nearly 5,000 researchers around the world.

The analysis uncovered some alarming findings, with widespread discrimination, harassment and bullying reported by researchers across all demographics. It is clear that much more work is needed to reform the research climate.
