Topic: Research information systems (CRIS)

Abstract

Data literacy is broadly defined as the ability to read, write, communicate and analyse data effectively.
When championed and implemented as an integral part of a Research and Impact strategy, organisations can achieve huge benefits – gathering insights in order to make focused data driven decisions.
In an ever changing research landscape, this skill is crucial. We are surrounded by data rich systems and processes, more-so now than ever. Data literacy no longer only applies to researchers, data analysts and statisticians - it is now integral to day-to-day research management. Investment in SaaS products, business intelligence and analytic tools have facilitated wider access to research management data, however quite often these are under-utilised, merely providing data for operational reporting or mandatory submissions.
This table discussion will provide peers with an opportunity to discuss the full strategic potential of the data that is available to us, the barriers encountered – be in a gap in data literacy or a lack of data culture within our leadership. We will discuss the merits of a strong data culture and various approaches towards eliminating the data literacy gaps.
