EARMA Conference Prague 2023

Format: Oral 30 Minutes

Topic: Organising Support Services & Team Building

Session: 🏀 1️⃣ Bridging the Divide by Caroline Barbour

Tuesday 25 April 3 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. (UTC)

Abstract

This thirty minute session will consist of a presentation followed by questions and discussion and will look at how Pre- and Post-Award teams can work together in a more collaborative and streamlined way.

Research managers and administrators must deal with ever-growing complexity alongside increasing workload, and in this environment it is easy for things to fall between the cracks. Poor communication and lack of understanding between Pre- and Post-Award teams can lead to problems such as ineligible costs, incorrect inclusion of third parties, lack of accountability and PI frustration.

Both King’s College London and Queen Mary University of London have adopted a ‘one team’ approach which has helped us to understand and avoid these common problems, and better manage our workload along the way. By adopting a shared partnership mindset, Pre- and Post-Award colleagues can avoid problems before they occur and be more responsive to new challenges, funders and schemes. In creating a unified front and joint processes and resources, Pre- and Post-Award can provide a more seamless service and streamlined support to PIs and departments.

The speakers will share their experiences from their current and previous institutions in order to show the benefits of Pre- and Post-Award working closely together throughout the project life cycle. Examples will be given of how to achieve the ‘one team’ approach in practice, especially in a time of increased remote working and staff turnover. Attendees will be encouraged to ask questions, share their own experiences and contribute to a discussion around best practices that foster collaboration, training and development, communication, transparency and accountability. No prior experience is required but attendees are welcome to share their own tips and suggestions.
