Navigating Complexity in Global Clinical Trials
Lessons from Managing the DRTB-HDT Study - A case study
Conference
Format: Oral 30 Minutes
Topic: 7. Transnational Collaborations
Abstract
Managing a global clinical trial like the DRTB-HDT study—spanning four continents and 10 partner institutions—brings both immense opportunities and complex challenges. This case study dives into the practical realities of steering a project that seeks to improve tuberculosis treatment outcomes, all while managing diverse teams, a change in coordinator role and more.
As the coordinator, we were tasked with ensuring the project's success through critical milestones, including securing a two-year extension, navigating a coordinator transition, and implementing a communication strategy that kept global partners connected and motivated. We also went through a full re-budgeting process to optimize resources and adapt to a changing environment. All while trying to continuously inspire and align a multinational team towards shared goals.
This presentation is tailored for research managers who grapple with the day-to-day complexities of running large, collaborative research projects. We will share actionable insights based on what we learned over the course of 4 years.
Learning outcomes include international communication strategies, risk management strategies and what to do when your worst-case scenario becomes reality. We’ll also talk about ways to keep the team spirits high – and maybe even your own – when the going gets tough!
