Abstract

In the rapidly evolving research landscape, trust in science is shifting towards the hands of the many, where it is co-governed by diverse stakeholders who can be considered stewards of trust. Among these, Research Managers (RMs) play a crucial and multifaceted role in contributing to the fostering of trust in science. Their responsibilities extend far beyond traditional administrative tasks and encompass roles in areas such as research production, education, communication, policymaking, funding, open science, and citizen science. As the research ecosystem changes, RMs must adopt a proactive stance to promote ethical practices, ensuring that Responsibility, Ethics and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) are embedded within research environments, and advancing sustainability in research and innovation (R&I). This presentation introduces a new initiative that positions RMs as central figures in this evolving paradigm. It underscores their responsibility to foster a culture of research excellence, innovation, and sustainable practices, while upholding ethical standards and advocating for equity, diversity, and inclusion. Based on the findings of the EU-funded VERITY project and in collaboration with EARMA, this talk presents strategies for RMs to enhance public trust in science through an ecosystemic approach, enabling a holistic perspective that aligns with the broader goals of sustainability and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). Within this framework, RMs are recognised not only as facilitators but as active co-creators of a world guided by responsibility, ethical values, and principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
