Topic: 3. Knowledge Valorisation

Abstract

This presentation examines how the Technical University of Eindhoven (TU/e) exemplifies the emerging 4th Generation University model, which integrates education, research, and innovation to achieve societal impact and regional development. Through a partnership with Elsevier, TU/e’s role in fostering local innovation ecosystems and acting as a gateway for talent in the Eindhoven region has been analyzed using quantitative metrics.
The session will present how TU/e builds early-stage collaborations with multinational corporations such as ASML, NXP, and Philips, as well as startups like Smart Photonics, to drive joint research and knowledge valorization. The presentation will also explore how TU/e leverages dual university-industry appointments and European-funded projects to lead in aligning with Key Enabling Technologies (KETs), effectively bridging academic research with practical applications.
In this 30/20-minute session, attendees will learn about TU/e’s strategies for supporting regional innovation and talent retention, contributing to economic growth. The presentation will offer practical insights into how other universities can replicate this model to enhance their own societal and economic impact.

Key takeaways for research managers and administrators (RMAs) will include:
- Best practices for forming early-stage collaborations and partnerships with industry.
- Framework for developing indicators that universities can use to assess and track their societal impact, talent retention and success in knowledge valorization.
- How to align university research with regional and global needs through innovation ecosystems.
- Practical strategies for measuring and enhancing knowledge valorization and regional economic contributions.
