University-led Grand Challenge programmes
Accelerating university impact through challenge-led, interdisciplinary research programmes
Conference
Format: Oral 30 Minutes
Topic: 1. Building Better RMA services
Abstract
Challenge-led, interdisciplinary research programmes tackling complex societal issues are an increasingly common feature in higher education institutions, globally. Whilst programmes are distinctive, there are many shared elements. These include navigating complex organisational structures, building capabilities and culture across the institution around new ways of working; curating relationships with external partners locally, nationally, and globally; and telling the story about the difference these programmes make in the transition to a more sustainable world. However, these programmes are tricky to get right, and sharing experiences can help us and others accelerate action.
In this case study, we will share lessons learnt from running three institutional challenge-led programmes at different stages of maturity:
• University College London – Grand Challenges: Siobhan Morris
• Monash University – University-led mission-oriented research and innovation: Matthew French
• University of Glasgow – Glasgow Changing Futures: Maria McPhillips
The presenting authors hold senior research management leadership roles within their respective institutions, which includes responsibility for successfully developing and delivering these programmes. In this session we will share our key learnings, ranging from programme design and governance, internal and external engagement, delivery and evaluation. We will also reflect on the value of our peer-to-peer collaboration.
This session will be of interest to research managers involved in designing and/or delivering these types of strategic programmes in their own institution. Through openly sharing experience and responding to questions, we aim to encourage sharing of good practice and learning between colleagues. We will also use this session to explore interest in creating an international community of practice for research managers supporting institutional challenge-led, mission-focussed programmes.
