Abstract
Processes and Product of the Research Compliance and Integrity (RCI) Document for the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
Research compliance is vital to maintaining research integrity, requiring clear instructions and regulations to guide actions. Despite efforts towards research management at the University of Ibadan, no dedicated document exclusively addressing RCI has been developed until the recent attempt. This paper presents the processes followed to create a comprehensive RCI toolkit for the University, serving as a practical guide for researchers, reviewers, and auditors. The study aimed to identify knowledge gaps in RCI, assess the need for a harmonized document, and engage stakeholders through organized meetings. The methodology involved reviewing existing documents, conducting a needs assessment survey, and facilitating stakeholders’ meetings. Key findings revealed that 67.4% of participants acknowledged the absence of an RCI document at the University. In comparison, 79.1% demonstrated familiarity with Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes, 58.1% and 67.4% of participants identified delays in funding and University financial regulations as potential threats to research integrity Consequently, the developed RCI Toolkit provides a streamlined framework for ensuring adherence to high standards of research conduct, including compliance with international, national, and institutional regulations. It monitors critical aspects such as IRB guidelines, conflict of interest, methodology adherence, Serious Adverse Events (SAEs), and grantor requirements. The toolkit promotes transparency and accountability throughout the research lifecycle, safeguarding research integrity and participants’ welfare.
