Hybrid model for research management
Paving the way towards the introduction of research managers in Hasselt University
Conference
Format: Oral 20 Minutes
Topic: 1. Building Better RMA services
Abstract
In today’s complex research environment, the role of research managers is essential for ensuring optimal support in navigating regulations and securing funding. At UHasselt, we’ve introduced a hybrid model to support researchers, combining centralized programme management with decentralized, faculty-specific guidance.
Through extensive consultation with all internal stakeholders, we have developed a research manager profile that addresses the unique needs of our academic community. Embedded within faculties and research institutes, research managers offer tailored support for thematic calls while the central office manages broader policies and global programmes. This dual structure allows for flexibility, making UHasselt’s research administration more responsive and effective.
We continuously evaluate the impact of research managers, using specific metrics. In tandem, we foster a collaborative learning network to inspire growth and connect research to the world stage. Together, these efforts ensure that UHasselt’s research continues to excel, creating a lasting societal impact.
During our talk we will focus on:
- identifying the stakeholders and deciding which partners to include in the creation of a research manager profile;
- the choice of the specific HR-statute and its impact on the research manager and the research community;
- the financing of the research managers and the development of a roadmap to finding additional financial resources for the continuation of the profile;
- the setting up of a system to monitor the leverage that research managers have on the academic performance.
