Abstract

In the dynamic landscape of research institutions, strategic decisions are often made without thorough planning for implementation and delivery. This paradox is evident when a decision to expand research activity lacks the necessary operational support until growth is demonstrably achieved. This case study delves into a significant collaborative initiative at the University of Manchester, where colleagues from various faculties and support areas co-developed an operational delivery plan to support research income growth.
Presented by a Deputy Director of Faculty Operations and a Head of Faculty Research and Business Engagement, this session outlines the comprehensive steps taken to develop, justify, fine-tune, and implement a successful business case for new resources. The session also addresses the challenges encountered in securing funding, recruiting, and training a large number of new colleagues. Key themes explored include:
Strategic Planning: Developing sustainable strategic plans aligned with university goals.
Using Metrics to Justify Resources: Leveraging data to build a compelling case for additional resources.
Collaborative Working: Balancing the needs of faculties and business areas with university strategic objectives.
Operational Activity and Workload Modelling: Understanding baseline activities and creating sustainable, achievable workloads.
Recruitment and Talent Management: Strategies for recruiting and inducting at scale, and managing internal talent.
Although this case study is based on the University’ of Manchester’s experience, the session is designed to provide transferable insights and practical strategies attendees can use locally.
Objectives:
Enhance Strategic Planning Skills for Sustainable Growth: Participants will learn to develop comprehensive and sustainable plans that align with strategic goals, ensuring decisions are supported by actionable implementation steps.
Utilise Metrics for Sustainable Resource Allocation: Attendees will understand how to use metrics to make compelling business cases for additional resources.
Foster Collaborative Working Practices: The session will equip participants with strategies to balance the diverse needs of various stakeholders and business areas, promoting collaborative efforts that deliver strategic goals.
