Making the Invisible Visible again: Embracing Neurodiversity and Cultural Awareness in the Workplace; Fostering Inclusive and Supportive Spaces
Conference
Format: Thematic groups talk
Topic: 9. Responsibility, Ethics, and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in Research and Innovation
Abstract
Can we truly accept diversity in all its forms? Many of us work alongside neurodivergent colleagues without even realizing it, and small changes in how we communicate and interact can make a huge difference in their experience. Similarly, understanding and navigating cultural differences is key in today’s international work environments. If overlooked, these aspects can lead to stress and mental health challenges for colleagues and collaborators.
This session is grounded in the motto of our thematic group on Equality, Culture, Diversity, and Inclusion (ECDI): Making the Invisible Visible Again. We aim to shed light on often unseen challenges—whether related to neurodivergence, cultural misunderstanding, or hidden barriers to inclusion—that impact the well-being and success of teams. By creating a safe, open space for discussion, we will explore how to recognize and address these issues proactively.
With real-world examples, we’ll show how tone, communication style, and cultural sensitivity can positively or negatively affect workplace dynamics and international collaboration. We’ll also introduce creative collaboration formats like World Café and Open Space, encouraging participants to share ideas and co-create practical solutions to foster inclusion and support.
This session is designed for the RMA community and anyone interested in diversity, well-being, and inclusion. You’ll leave with practical tools to help make the invisible visible in your own environment, empowering you to create a workplace where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported.
