Brave New World: Navigating AI in Research Management and Administration

Conference

INORMS Congress Madrid 2025

Format: Fifteen-Minute Discussion Tables

Topic: 6. Responsible Use of AI in Research Management

Abstract

AI is transforming research management and administration (RMA), reshaping how research is managed, funded, and communicated. This session is designed for research managers and administrators at all levels, from beginners to experienced professionals. It will offer insights into both the opportunities and challenges AI presents, providing practical strategies for integrating AI into daily work while considering its broader implications and potential to revolutionise the research landscape.

The first part of the session will introduce generative AI tools like large language models, showing how they can be powerful allies - enhancing creativity, streamlining workflows, and enhancing collaboration. Through interactive demonstrations and discussion, participants will explore practical approaches for using AI to enhance leadership in research, promote creativity, and facilitate more meaningful interactions with stakeholders, including industry partners, policymakers, and the broader community. We will also address ethical concerns, such as AI’s potential to perpetuate biases and disrupt traditional roles, as well as its impact on productivity and engagement.

The second part focuses on AI’s impact on research grant writing. We will explore how AI can assist in structuring proposals, improving coherence, and boosting efficiency. However, we will also assess whether these benefits come with trade-offs. What are the implications of increased AI reliance, and how might it affect the authenticity of research outputs? Participants will gain insights into navigating these challenges, including intellectual property concerns, plagiarism, and balancing human creativity with machine-generated content.

Finally, we’ll look ahead to AI’s continued evolution and global implications, helping participants stay adaptable and prepared for the future. By the end of the session, attendees will leave with a toolkit of best practices and ethical frameworks to help them stay competitive, informed, and thoughtful as AI continues to evolve in the research landscape.

Format: 30-minute presentation followed by an interactive discussion.
