Abstract
The higher education system in South Africa is going through a transformation, with a focus on addressing historical inequalities and improving academic research quality. The University Capacity Development Grant (UCDG) is a key initiative in this pursuit. The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) identified two critical areas for transformation and how the UCDG has been used to support academic staff development. The purpose of this study was to examine how the UCDG has affected the transformation efforts at the University of the Free State (UFS). In addition, the comprehensive approach aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the UCDG's influence on UFS's transformation journey. An analysis was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the UCDG in promoting access, equity, and success for previously disadvantaged groups within the university. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data on UCDG allocation and utilisation with qualitative data gathered through evaluation document analysis of UFS staff transformation plans and reports. Our findings contributed to valuable insights for policymakers, university administrators, and researchers. By evaluating the impact of the UCDG, the study informed future grant distribution strategies and empowered universities to refine their transformation efforts towards a more equitable and inclusive higher education landscape in South Africa.
