Scaling your Research Admin. for the Future

What can we learn from U.S.-based research institutions to develop a plan to support a growing and complex research environment

Conference

INORMS Congress Madrid 2025

Format: Oral 20 Minutes

Topic: 1. Building Better RMA services

Abstract

Research administration is undergoing significant transformation, driven by global pressures such as increased competition for funding, stricter regulatory environments, and the rapid integration of emerging technologies. These forces require institutions to reevaluate their pre- and post-award processes to maintain efficiency, compliance, and competitiveness. As research becomes more collaborative and cross-border, ensuring alignment with international standards and managing the complexity of multi-institutional projects are critical challenges. Moreover, the demand for transparency, accountability, and results has never been higher, making it essential for research organizations to adopt new technologies that streamline operations and enhance decision-making.

In this session, we will explore how institutions can scale their research administration to meet these evolving demands. Drawing from U.S. best practices, we will discuss the importance of establishing a strategic research vision that integrates both pre- and post-award functions. This involves using benchmarks to assess current processes, identify gaps, and build a compelling case for change, especially in resource allocation and operational efficiency. We will also examine the role of artificial intelligence in reshaping governance, compliance, and skills development. AI is not only automating routine tasks but also shifting the required skillsets for research administrators, who now need to be big-picture thinkers capable of managing increasingly complex systems.
