Abstract

National Laboratories and RIs expect researchers to work within a system that does not explicitly provide a clear career path for them as a researcher. And yet, National Laboratories critically depend on the on the drive and skill-base of the cohort of researchers.
I present the UKRI-STFC Research and Researcher Development Programme (RRD) which is driving both cultural and practical changes to improve research culture, encourage internal and external collaboration and provides a framework to support the development of researchers in the STFC -UKRI National Laboratories.
The RRD programme was organised into four work streams: Research Culture; Researcher Development; Research Development, and Researcher Engagement. With the aim of driving a positive research culture at its heart, the RRD programme has brought together researchers and RMA professional together to drive change.
I will discuss how the RRD programme has led to organisational changes such as:
• Altered HR processes to improve identification of research misconduct
• The establishment of a new research office and research board
• The pilot of research development plans aimed at supporting early career researchers
• A range of activities that improve cross departmental collaboration.
But perhaps most importantly, it has driven a culture of engagement in improving Ethical research practices and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
