Strategic EDI starting points for RMAs

Conference

INORMS Congress Madrid 2025

Format: Fifteen-Minute Discussion Tables

Topic: 9. Responsibility, Ethics, and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in Research and Innovation

Abstract

In a landscape increasingly influenced by societal demands and requirements of research funders, Research Management Administrators (RMAs) are uniquely positioned to drive meaningful change in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within their institutions. However, embarking on EDI initiatives can be challenging due to the many possible starting points and the complex dynamics of organizational politics. This discussion table will address the pressing question: Where should one begin?
The choice between focusing on research content (such as the inclusion of diverse perspectives and equitable research methodologies) or implementing foundational changes (like hiring practices, promotion pathways, and anti-discrimination initiatives) presents a fundamental dilemma for RMAs. Additionally, differences in institutional openness to EDI initiatives across national and organizational cultures complicate this decision-making process.
Bringing together a diverse panel of RMAs with rich experiences across multiple contexts, this session will provide invaluable insights into the strategic navigation of organizational landscapes to foster EDI. Participants will share personal journeys of initiation into EDI efforts, highlighting effective strategies to gain buy-in from stakeholders, challenge established norms, and create an inclusive environment at their institutions.
Through practical case studies from the hosts and open discussions, attendees will learn how to identify critical leverage points for EDI initiatives and will gain clarity on how to prioritize actions for the greatest impact. The session aims to empower RMAs to advocate for necessary changes, build alliances, and promote a culture of inclusivity at their institutions, ultimately bridging the gap between ambition and implementation.
Join us for an interactive dialogue that promises not only to inform but also to inspire actionable insights for RMAs seeking to start and advance EDI work in research environments. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities for a more equitable future in research management.
