Enhancing Policy Impact and Excellence in EU-Funded Research: The Role of Research Managers

Conference

INORMS Congress Madrid 2025

Format: Oral 30 Minutes

Topic: 1. Building Better RMA services

Abstract

In an era where science and policy intersect more than ever, the role of research managers in shaping excellence, security, and trust in research is becoming increasingly pivotal. How can EU-funded projects contribute to a better alignment of research and policy frameworks? What impact do they have on the broader European Research Area? And how can research managers leverage these initiatives to drive a lasting and sustainable change?

This dynamic one-hour panel discussion, moderated by Sarah Richardson, Editor-in-Chief of Research Professional News, will bring together coordinators from EU-funded projects and representatives from EU bodies and agencies. Through an engaging conversation split into two sections, panelists will first explore the policy-oriented contributions of their projects, followed by a deeper dive into the tangible impacts and future potential of their work.
The session will highlight the cross-cutting themes that unite these initiatives – research ethics and integrity, sustainability, innovation, capacity building, efficiency, and knowledge transfer – while also identifying synergies that can further strengthen their collective impact.

As part of the discussion, coordinators from the following EU-funded projects will present their insights:
- CATALISI: Catalysation of institutional transformations of higher education institutions through the adoption of acceleration services
- IP4OS: Unpacking the possibilities of intellectual properties for open science
- iRECS: Enhancing research ethics expertise to ensure reliability and trust in science
- RE4GREEN: Developing an ethics and integrity framework for research and innovation activities that addresses environmental and climate challenges
- PATTERN: Developing training modules on transferable skills, including open access, FAIR data management, and science communication, to empower researchers.
- RM FRAMEWORK: Creating a European framework for research management training and networking
- RM ROADMAP: Creating framework conditions for research management to strengthen the European Research Area
- VERITY: Developing scientific research with ethics and integrity

Throughout the session, panelists will share their experiences in supporting and implementing policy-driven actions, discuss challenges they have encountered, and explore the potential for further strengthening excellence and trust in science. The discussion will provide a strategic perspective on how research managers can engage with EU policy processes, contribute to impactful initiatives, and foster collaboration across disciplines and sectors.
This session will provide opportunity to engage with leading experts and contribute to the dialogue on advancing research management within the European Research Area.
