Conference

INORMS Congress Madrid 2025

Format: Thematic groups talk

Topic: 4. Open Science

Abstract

Building on the momentum from the "Open Science in a Changing Global System" event in September 2024 and the "Open Science - US - Europe and Beyond" session presented by Jan Andersen at the SRAi Conference in October 2024, this panel discussion, hosted by the EARMA Open Science Thematic Group, seeks to deepen the dialogue and further develop themes identified during these previous sessions. The panel will bring together a diverse group of experts to explore the practical realities of implementing open science, focusing on advancements, ongoing challenges, and the experiences of RMAs across different continents, political cultures and jurisdictions.
The session will examine the delicate balance between the day-to-day practices of open science and the overarching strategies and policies guiding these efforts. Special attention will be given to global initiatives, such as the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science and the contributions of various working groups, alongside the distinct approaches taken in different regions. For example, the European model emphasises guidelines and collaborative initiatives, exemplified by CoARA, while the US approach is more law-driven, exemplified by the Nelson memorandum.
Furthermore, the panel will delve into the paradoxes and potential opportunities of open science within the broader context of globalisation, global security, and rising geopolitical tensions. This discussion aims to provide a nuanced understanding among RMAs on how open science can thrive in a complex, interconnected world while addressing the unique challenges posed by different political and cultural landscapes. Through this session, we hope to advance the discourse on open science, paving the way for more cohesive and effective global strategies.
