Bridge over choppy water
Bridge over choppy water - the value of cross-sectoral RMA experience on research, collaboration and impact
Conference
Format: Fifteen-Minute Discussion Tables
Topic: 3. Knowledge Valorisation
Abstract
Cross-Sector Experience in Research Management, does it add value to research impact? Can it make us a 'bridge over choppy water' that connect academia to stakeholders?
Welcome to our discussion table! We invite you to explore the value that diversity in Research Managers experience - from academia, industry, politics, healthcare, or other sectors—can bring to planning impactful research and establishing fruitful collaborations.
Why is this important? Real-world impact from research often hinges on the effective transfer of knowledge beyond the academic sphere. Different sectors bring unique perspectives, cultural norms, mindsets, and motivations. Does having cross-sectoral experience enable RMAs to bridge communication gaps, prevent misunderstandings, align expectations, and anticipate future challenges?
Discussion Points:
• Do you believe cross-sector experience adds value in the research office context or can it be disruptive (good or bad) due to different experiences, backgrounds?
• Is experience the only teacher, or can we instill the skills learned from cross sector experience within our teams? How?
Your hosts, Andreas Westermoen and Hillary Cronin, both now in academic research management but with a background in research-intensive SMEs are curious and welcome your insights and opinions on the topic. We are looking forward to a rich discussion with a mix of backgrounds and perspectives.
