Bridging the AI Divide To A Sustainable Profession
A Three-Pillar Approach to GenAI in Research Management to Build A Future-Proof and Sustainable Profession
Conference
Format: Oral 30 Minutes
Topic: 6. Responsible Use of AI in Research Management
Abstract
Opinions on Generative AI (GenAI) are divided globally among research managers and administrators (RMAs). While some fear job displacement, others see it as a breakthrough innovation. Yet, most remain uncertain due to unfamiliarity and a lack of information. The mixed sentiments prevent full leverage of GenAI. As we navigate the AI transformation, we must focus on our most important asset: the people.
At the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU)’s Research Office, we addressed the divide through an ambitious FUTURE project, empowering RMAs to blend their expertise with AI capabilities. We used a unique three-pillar approach, focusing on technology, training, and policy development for consensus-building simultaneously.
We will present:
1. A framework for integrating GenAI into RMA’s workflow.
2. Real-world use cases and custom GPTs.
3. Practice of GenAI workshops tailored for different audiences: focus group in the FUTURE project, RMAs in the Research Office, researchers, and general staff.
4. Our journey navigating data security concerns and resistance through cross-department collaboration and living guidelines.
What’s the impact of our approach? Through adoption metrics and user feedback, we will showcase how our initiative is shaping an AI-ready workforce with GenAI skills and keen awareness of its potential and pitfalls. The FUTURE project also marks our first effort to integrate AI literacy into RMAs’ career development.
Take-home messages:
1. Value the human in the loop: Combine human expertise with GenAI to revolutionize our profession.
2. Elevate GenAI competency for a sustainable and future-proof career: Upskill your team with practical GenAI skills and access to frontier large language models via pilot project and structured training
3. Craft a roadmap for responsible adoption: Develop policies and cross-departmental networks to balance innovation with integrity in GenAI implementation.
4. Implement our three-pillar approach for successful GenAI integration: Address Technology, Training, and Policy aspects simultaneously.
