Advancing Research Management through Internationalization and Strategic Collaboration at ISGlobal
Abstract
Collaboration is a cornerstone of scientific progress, allowing researchers to pool resources, knowledge and expertise to tackle complex problems. The promotion of collaboration needs to be extended to other actors involved in the research process. This is particularly relevant for research managers and support staff, as they are key actors who play a crucial role in fostering a culture of research excellence.
At ISGlobal, the Projects Unit aligns research management and grants management activities as the interface between science and administration, and it is integrated by a team of highly specialised research managers.
The ISGlobal Project Unit's strategy includes a specific action to promote the participation and leadership of its members in national and international networks and other related activities. This approach not only enhances collaboration and knowledge sharing, but also aligns with the concept of sustainability by fostering long-term partnerships and promoting collective impact. Through active participation in various networks, the Projects Unit supports the development of innovative solutions to global challenges, ensuring that research contributes to create lasting benefits for people and the environment.
Our international collaboration and networking activities include relevant activity within EARMA. We currently co-chair the Ethics and Integrity Officers Network (ERION), are core members of the Open Science Thematic Group and the BESTPRACT network, and actively participate in the Post-Award Project Management and EARMAImpact Thematic Groups. We are also involved in the pilot of the EARMA Mentorship Scheme and in the RM Roadmap project as Associate Ambassadors for Spain and Ambassadors of the Thematic Group on Research Ethics and Integrity.
The Projects Unit also has a Visitors Programme for international research managers and administrators, both incoming and outgoing. Various activities include regular visits of our strategic collaborators and short stays in institutions (EU and abroad), and participation in Widera projects to host research managers from organisations based in Widening countries.
In summary, the ISGlobal Project Unit promotes a culture of collaboration as a key strategic element to enhance the internationalisation of ISGlobal's research management professionals and, by extension, other neighbouring institutions, to further promote regional specialisation and collaboration, and to contribute to the sustainability of our profession.
