Research Security under US Government Awards

The US Perspective on Research Security Programs

Conference

INORMS Congress Madrid 2025

Format: Oral 30 Minutes

Topic: 2. Governance and Regulation

Abstract

Few issues have stormed into the research community quite like research security and improper influence have descended on US government-funded projects in the last few years. To address risks posed by strategic competitors to the US research and development (R&D) enterprise, the US government has implemented several measures to improve research security while preserving the openness that has long enabled US R&D leadership throughout the world. This session focuses on the US government’s research security expectations, which are designed to ensure that institutions of higher education and other research institutions recognize the altered global landscape and fulfill their responsibilities as the first line of defense against improper or illicit activity. As many institutions are still acclimating to the changes in geopolitics, the US government has rolled out new expectations for security under its research grants and contracts, including (1) cybersecurity; (2) foreign travel security; (3) research security training; and (4) export control training. This session centers on the new research security requirements.
