Format: Oral 30 Minutes

Topic: 1. Building Better RMA services

Abstract

As the European research and innovation ecosystem continues to evolve, the role of research managers is becoming increasingly strategic, requiring enhanced recognition, structured career paths and professional development, and innovative support mechanisms. But how can we ensure that research managers are equipped with the right skills, networks, and tools to navigate this complex environment?

This session will introduce the RM FRAMEWORK project, a newly launched EU-funded initiative aimed at strengthening research management across Europe. Although still in its early stages, RM FRAMEWORK aspires to build a structured and sustainable training framework for research managers, recognising their essential role in driving research excellence and institutional success.

Bringing together Work Package leaders and project coordinators, this discussion will provide an initial glimpse into the project’s vision, objectives, and expected outcomes. Panellists will explore key themes, including:

- The need for a more structured and better recognised profession of research management in Europe.
- Plans for a handbook for developing high-quality training programmes for research managers and pilot training programmes to test and measure their impact on both individuals and institutions.
- The scope of a quality label enabling the standardisation and high-quality provision of research management training programmes.
- Strategies for fostering stronger networks and collaborations across institutions and disciplines.
- The potential impact on the European Research Area (ERA) and research excellence.

Given that the project will only be in its early stage of development at the time of the conference, this session is an opportunity for the research management community to engage in an open dialogue, share expectations, and discuss the challenges that RM FRAMEWORK seeks to address.
