Abstract

This study explores the incorporation of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) with a focus on gender equality using a case study of an international research institute in Austria. We examine gender inclusion across multiple facets of the institution's operations, including recruitment processes, gender representation in management, leadership roles and capacity building. The analysis extends to the formation of various committees within the institute, recognition and merit increases, project leadership, and co-authorship in publications. Furthermore, the research investigates how specific gender dimensions are integrated into research questions, ensuring a comprehensive approach to gender inclusivity.
We consider variables such as the different levels of educational attainment, skills, and languages among staff, acknowledging how these factors influence gender inclusion. The study addresses potential unconscious biases that may impact decision-making processes and highlights the stigma associated with the necessity to include individuals from the Global South. Additionally, the research examines the stigma related to announcing and accommodating a third gender within the institute.
The study identifies significant challenges encountered in implementing these initiatives and considers the implications of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on gender-related data handling. Our findings aim to provide actionable insights for fostering an inclusive environment that promotes gender equity across all levels of a research institute.
